TAI CHI CH’UAN
Tai Chi Ch’uan (Taiji Juan) or ‘Grand Ultimate Fist’ originated in the 12th century by a Taoist monk named Zhang Sanfeng. Originally created as an internal martial art, it is primarily recognized today for its’ health benefits and mindfulness. Over the years Tai Chi developed into 5 distinct styles; Chen, Yang, Wu-Hao, Wu and Sun. Today the most recognized is Yang style. This is what you’ll most likely see being perfomed by large groups at the park in Chinatown. It places an emphasis upon Tai Chi’s healing qualities and meditative process.
I have been practicing Yang style Tai Chi Ch’uan for more than 15 years. While I believe the health and spiritual aspects are extremely important I also think it is necessary that the practicioner has a basic understanding of the martial application of each move.
