Tai Chi / Qigong Roadmap - First Year

_________________________________________

By the end of 12 months (3x per week) the student should feel proficient in the following practices:

Tai Chi

• Core System Short Form (developed by Sifu Carl Totten). By the end of year one a student should be able to perform this form with ease and without help. Student should feel confident with each movement within the form and able to synch their breath with each movement. Basically they should know the ‘dance’ steps. Starting in the second year we will begin to develop internal releace of energy (Jin).

Qigong

• Between Heaven and Earth (Warm up set)

• Basic Qigong movements (Ba Men Qigong)

• Silk Weaver’s Exercise

• Basic Qigong Walk

• Standing / Seated Meditation and visualization

• Wuji - Students should have a through knowledge of what it is, why we do it and what it symoblizes. Should be able to hold wuji for at least 5 minutes with ease.

• Tai Chi Post / Standing Meditation

• Visualization and Sensory Perception (Ting)

• Should be familiar with the idea of self-acupuncture, ‘breath-dropping’ technique. i.e. While in standing meditation, dropping the breath and weight and guiding energy blocks thru and out the body.

• Qigong Breathing - The student should have a beginning sense how to visualize Qi moving throughout the body. Drawing in thru the breath and moving down into the Lower Diantien, ‘spinning’ the internal Water Wheel and then moving up and out the 6 gates of the body.

• Student might be able to start ‘sensing’ the presence of Qi in the body (i.e. in the hands, feet etc). Starting to perceive subtle ‘shifts’ in awareness (tingling, heaviness, visuals, itching, warmth etc). This is not required. There is absolutely nothing wrong if the student cannot ‘sense’ anything yet.

General Knowledge and Philosophy

The student should be able to give a basic answer to the following questions:

  • What is Qi? What does Qigong mean? How old is it? How is it used?

  • What does Tai Chi Ch’uan mean? How old is it? How is it used?

  • What is the difference between Qigong and Tai Chi?

  • What does Yin / Yang mean? How is Yin / Yang expressed in the body when we are doing Tai Chi / Qigong?

  • What are the 3 parts to the Tai Chi / Qigong triangle? What do they mean?

  • What is the difference between Weidan and Neidan Qigong?

  • Where are the Conception, Governing and Thrusting Vessels located on the body?

  • What is a Dan Tian? Where are the 3 Dantiens located in the body?

  • What are the 2 sources of Qi? Which Dantien is involved with each source of Qi?

  • According to Daoism, why do we stand in Wuji at the beginning and end of our forms?
